Indigenous Women Step Out Of The Background

photo and story on narratively.com by Megan Giller

Awhile ago I posted about a narratively digital article by Megan Giller about the indigenous women in the background of some of south America’s most prominent male chefs. One was Patricia Perez who uses her grandmother’s ancient map to forage for plants and herbs in the desert no one else can access. With the link below you can read or listen to her story and the stories of the indigenous women behind some of the biggest male chefs. Visit https://bityl.co/8WYJ

My more recent, and exciting news is that the 2023 James Beard Awards are just out. For those of you who don’t know these culinary awards are the food equivalent of “The Oscars.” And, at long last, the first indigenous woman has been acknowledged with a win. Sherry Pocknett was named Best Chef prevailing over 20 semifinalists. She is from the Mashpee Wampanoag tribe. Her two restaurants Sly Fox Den, in Pocquetanuck Bay, Connecticut, and Sly Fox Den Too, located in Charlestown, Rhode Island, are named after her late father and are in Rhode Island. the restaurants’ menus celebrate Native American homemade food traditions.
